Apprenticeship recruitment calendar

The University recruits apprentices into cohorts. This enables us to:

  • develop an outreach strategy;
  • align with industry, academic terms and competitors;
  • streamline recruitment processes, providing more support to recruiting managers and applicants;
  • create a community of apprentices at the University; and
  • implement a buddy system

We compete in a candidate-led market to recruit and retain talent. Candidates increasingly expect more from employers; they are interested in employee mental health and wellbeing, diversity, equity and inclusion, flexible working, and career pathways to name a few.

The ability to ensure a positive candidate experience throughout the application process is key to ensuring successful recruitment. To enable us to best support applicants and recruiting managers we have moved to cohort recruitment to allow the apprenticeship team to focus on our attraction and outreach strategy and developing the best apprenticeship programmes.

Cohorts run in January, April and September. We strongly encourage departments to aim towards the September cohort, as we see higher application numbers for this start date.

We will work c.30 different training providers and below you will find a list of the apprenticeship courses we currently run. However, if you do not see the course you are looking for please contact us as there are over 650 apprenticeships to choose from.

Following the success of our Apprenticeship Talent Pool pilot, we are now delighted to announce that we are rolling this out as our main apprenticeship recruitment process for future cohorts.

The closing date for the September 2024 cohort has been extended for applicants to 20 May 2024. Please see our revised department deadlines below:

Date Action
Friday 7 June at midday

Final Deadline for agreed Job Descriptions to reach the Apprenticeship Team in order for us to circulate them to eligible Talent Pool Candidates.

We must have discussed and agreed these in advance and JDs must come with a Vacancy ID. If you wait until the final days to send your JD, you may already have missed out on strong candidates, or be competing for the last few. After this date, recruitment will move to the next cohort (January) if available.

Tuesday 30 April at midday (for early birds!) Note: Any JDs that are ready for circulation prior to the end of April can also be advertised on the Government's Find an Apprenticeship website for two weeks to boost further interest. This site also links to indeed.com, Reed, UCAS apprenticeships etc. so for wider reach ensure we have them before Tuesday 30 April at noon. However if taking advantage of this, departments must allow longer to receive applications as there'll be a number of new applicants that haven't yet been checked (1 month in total needed from circulation of the JD to receipt of applications to the department).

How do I know the start dates for the course I’m interested in recruiting for?

Take a look at our Courses section on this page to find the relevant course and which month it starts in.

Can I start my apprentice before the official cohort start month?

We recommend you align your apprentice's start date as close as possible to one of the three cohort start dates: January, April and September. Whilst managers can start the apprentices in their teams before the cohort start date, the technical element will start in line with these dates.
